[Book Review] Be True, Lil Peter, Be You, [Authors] Tasche Laine & Peter Valdez

Illustrations by Mei Mei Leonard

Lil Peter is back, and I am so glad! We love the books featuring this adorable character and we are always eager to discover a new story with valuable lessons to learn. This time, we have been given the first of a heartwarming story, one from which children can discover how important it can be to believe in themselves. At the same time, they can learn all about being authentic, confident, and resilient. These are all essential attributes and I glad to have read this story to my daughter.

My opinion:

The story features not only Lil Peter, but also his brother, Marty. The two of them are about to deliver speeches and stage fright in an important issue. Is being oneself enough? And what is the best way to overcome the fear of public speaking? No spoilers, I can only encourage you to read the story and discover what happened in the end. All I can say is that sometimes being yourself can make quite a difference. I think this lovely story will inspire children to believe in themselves, not to mention become more resilient.

All the books featuring Lil Peter are amazing, teaching kids valuable lessons. Each is special in its own way and this particular one is beautiful. One of the values I strive to teach my daughter is authenticity and I was so glad to discover a story that centers around this topic. We should always be proud of who we are, big or small. Kids need our guidance whereas such matters are concerned, and I prefer to use stories in order to make a point. Lil Peter has helped my daughter shine, and I believe it will help so many more children realize how awesome they are.

Let’s keep choosing books that offer beautiful stories, with lessons that children can learn and remember. One of the things I loved the most about this story was the relationship between the two brothers. Reading, you could really tell that it stemmed from personal experience, the love shining throughout the entire story. I have a sister, but I can relate to the story without hesitation. More often than not, adults end up reading books for children, being reminded of what truly matters. And I am grateful for stories like this one.

Verdict:

This was a wonderful story, one which I was glad to share with my daughter. She learned so many valuable lessons from this book, and I was reminded of what my priorities should be. This book can teach children how to stay true to themselves and have confidence in their abilities. At the same time, they can discover what true brother love is all about, learning the best ways to offer support to their sibling, when needed. Indeed, the Lil Peter books are beautiful, always accompanied by wonderful illustrations. I applaud the illustrator for brining such stories to life, well done to all!
