[Book Review] My Teacher is a Space Slug, [Author] Francesca Watt

If you live in Boring Bay, you might think that nothing ever happens, well at least nothing that is out of the ordinary. Think again, as the primary school has a teacher who is uniquely different. “My Teacher is a Space Slug” is the first book I read from the brand new “Top Secret Book Series” and I was hooked right from the start. To say that my six-year-old loved it would be an understatement. Francesca Watt is a brilliant author and illustrator, and her new book proves her immense talent to perfection.

My opinion:

This is such a creative book! I read it to my daughter and we both laughed our hearts out. My daughter has just started school and she has the wildest imagination, so she immediately started to imagine how it would be if her own teacher was a space slug. I loved the story just as much and I think Mrs Mantle is just the most interesting teacher I have ever seen, with teaching skills that are out of this world, if you know what I mean. After all, her slimy secret might not be as secret as expected, especially since someone has figured out who she really is.

Having read the other books written by this author, I was not surprised to see another story that is original and creative. The story is written in rhyme, and it contains so many clever details, not to mention funny bits. Tentacles that look like buns, a sluggish mantle that oozes space dust, a purple glow… she is not like any other teacher I have ever seen, but I love her nonetheless. Someone is bound to uncover her secret, but who? As always, no spoilers, I encourage you to read the book in order to find out how the story turns out.

With a small kid at home, I am always on the lookout for books that are unique, and I always come back to the books written by this author with pleasure. They are really fun to read, not just for my daughter, but also for my inner child. I absolutely loved Mrs Mantle and her story, and I am confident that the other books in the series will be just as incredible. There are also some valuable lessons to learn from this otherwise funny book, sprinkled with care. In my opinion, this is the kind of book that leaves you with a feel-good sentiment.

Summary:

This is one cool book! I loved the concept and the illustrations, and I think that Mrs Mantle is indeed a space slug. My daughter enjoyed the story quite a lot and she is now trying to determine if her own teacher could be something like that. The best books are the ones that delight children once, then invite them to journey into their own imagination. Francesca Watt is a brilliant author and illustrator, and we are always delighted to read one of her books. This new series is great, I am excited to check out the next book. Top secret!
