[Book Review] The Secret Life of Debby-Sue: First Dance Blues, [Author] Denise Nicole

Is there a bigger happiness than discovering a new book in one of your favorite series? I was so excited to read the latest adventure of Debby-Sue and I am not ashamed to admit that I read it in one sitting, as I was so curious to find out what happens. As the mom of a little girl, I am already picturing her big moments, including her first school dance. Reading about Debby-Sue and her dance blues, as the author so wonderfully puts it, I remembered my own teenager years and how complicated everything seemed to be. Filled with nostalgia for both the past and the future, I dived into the story, forgetting about the passing of time.

My opinion:

Leave it to Denise Nicole to bring together all the emotions of teen age! Debby-Sue is about to go to her first high school dance, and she is already nervous about talking to her crush. A bit of encouragement from her friends would help, especially from the furry fox we have all grown to love. As it often happens in the world of teenagers, things will take a dramatic turn. Not only is homecoming threatened, but it seems that some friendships might break apart. High school life is complicated, that is for certain. Debby-Sue has to face so many things at once, learning all about forgiveness in the process. What will happen in the end? You will have to read the book to find out!

Any mother will tell you that her kids are growing way too fast, and somehow, I felt the same with Debby-Sue. How can she be in high school already, dealing with the first love and everything? I absolutely loved how the story was portrayed, and that Fox is still present, ready to offer not only guidance but also words of wisdom. We have all been through this rite of passage and I often think how amazing it would have been to have a friend like Fox by our side. Real friends matter too, as they can make teen age years more bearable. Debby-Sue is about to discover not only the value of friendship, but also the one of forgiveness, and her growing up makes me think of my daughter.

I have read every book in the series, and I just love Debby-Sue as a character. The author did a great job in capturing every age and its difficulties, and I think that only an empathic soul would be capable of such a thing. I am confident that the story will be relatable to teenagers, as they too are dealing with first crushes and misunderstandings, not to mention various predicaments, which I am going to let you discover on your own. You cannot read this book and not feel nostalgic, either for your own chapter, or for your kids, who are growing up faster than you have ever imagined.

Summary:

I hope everyone will give Debby-Sue a try, all the books in the series are beyond amazing and totally relatable. I still have trouble believing Debby-Sue is a teenager through and through, dealing with all the typical complications of that age. How cool is it that Fox is still around, offering advice as needed. Let’s help our children retain some of that magic, even when they become teenagers and might seem in a hurry to grow up. Give them Debby-Sue to read and I can guarantee they will fall in love with her, not to mention Fox!
