[Book Review] My Granny is an Alien, [Author] Francesca Watt

A granny with a clever disguise. A granddaughter who realizes that things are not what they seem. Another brilliant book in the Top Secret series, this time with granny as a star. The story will stimulate the imagination of children, with the author inviting them, once again, to think outside the box. The illustrations, which are done by the author herself, are brilliant, resembling comic strips. Like the other books in the series, I think they will truly appeal to reluctant readers, encouraging them to discover their love for reading.

My opinion:

Francesca Watt has a truly original style, both in terms of illustrations and text. She writes in rhyme and often make us of intelligent wordplay, appealing to readers, big and small. I absolutely loved that she made granny a star, I think this will encourage kids to look at their own grandmas and realize how amazing they are. In the words of the author, “gran is no ordinary granny”. This story, aside from the fun factors, will strengthen the relationship between grandmas and their grandchildren, which is such a beautiful thing.

My daughter has found this story to be hilarious. After we read, she tried to decide which one of her grannies might be from Mars, coming up with different arguments. Maybe they have clever disguises indeed. I think therein lies the value of stories, and it must be an incredible feeling to know that you have helped kids explore their own imagination. This is the type of story that comes with guaranteed giggles, and I must admit that I was pretty curious myself. I just wanted to find out what happens next and how the story would turn out.

Grannies are often fun and silly, and we should appreciate them as they are. I think this is one of the main lessons to learn from this book. Granny might be an alien, but she can do so many incredible things, and this is what matters the most. Once again, the author highlights the importance of acceptance, something which kids need to learn from a young age. For me, reading books like this one is always a pleasure, as the blend between humor, emotion, and education is excellent. You can feel the love she has for writing throughout the entire book.

Verdict:

This was a beautiful read, one which reminded me that we must love each other, no matter how different we may be. Francesca has done an excellent job in creating a story where granny is the star, with quality humor and wonderful illustrations. The dialogue is witty and there are so many intelligent remarks, that I am sure the book will appeal to adults as well. The book is guaranteed to generate plenty of giggles, and I think it is a suitable choice for early readers. We enjoyed it together and we are looking forward to reading the next book in the series.
