[Book Review] A Dog’s Bucket List, [Author] Karen Olson

A wonderful chapter book about a dog who finds a loving family, and decides to make a rather unusual bucket list. The story of Nike, the dog who decided to live to the fullest, will definitely be enjoyed by young readers.

My thoughts:

I found Nike’s story to be absolutely delightful. After reading about this lovely character and his big red back, I wanted to do the same – why not be a flying squirrel, a detective, or a skydiver? My daughter, who is three-years old, enjoyed the story tremendously, finding Nike to be adorable.

As a parent always on the lookout for fun books, I can tell you this is a keeper. I applaud the author’s imagination, and the fact that she decided to tell the story from the dog’s perspective – what an ingenious choice! Here we have a story filled with adventure, but the underlying message made me quite emotional. Anyone deserves a loving family, someone who can support and be there for us, no matter what.

The story, as you will see, is based on the life of real Nike. Throughout the book, I could sense the author’s love for him, and this made me happy. Seeing poor abandoned Nike at the beginning might make you think you’ve found a sad story, but the tale quickly turns around, with so many wonderful adventures.

Verdict:

We loved this book! My daughter loved Nike, and his adventures, and I believe many other children will feel the same. A feel-good book, which offers important lessons on kindness, love, and living life to the fullest.
