[Book Review] Bently the Bully, [Author] Holly Mazzochi

A book with lovely message! Holly Mazzochi delivers a story that can teach children valuable lessons, centered a theme that is highly relevant for today’s world, bullying.

My thoughts:

As a mother, naturally I am worried about the world my daughter grows in and how she will face its challenges. Even though she is only four years old, we have already talked about this unwanted behavior and its consequences. She told me how bad she felt to be around a bully and I was glad to find a book that could help me explain the matter in detail.

My daughter loved this book. We read it at bedtime and I think she got the main message – we must be kind to others and forgive them when they are in the wrong. We often believe children are too young to learn about empathy, but our littles can surprise us.

Through wonderful stories like this one, we encourage our kids to speak up for themselves. I loved the clever way in which the author wrapped up the story, as it reminded me that things are rarely as they seem. No spoilers here, all I can say is that your little ones will be pleased with how the story turns out.

What were the things I loved most about the book?

· Clever way in which the topic of bullying was addressed – our kids need to learn to stand up for themselves but they must also remember bullying is sometimes used to mask difficult emotions

· Message – I want to raise a healthy child and I am glad to come across stories like this one, stories that offer powerful lessons on the equal value of kindness and forgiveness

· Slice of reality – bullying is the kind of behavior some children use to cover up their feelings and I feel grateful for this story, as it allowed me to teach my daughter to be patient and offer her love to other children; as adults, we could learn a thing or two about love and caring for others from this story

· Written in rhyme – appeals more to children, keeps them engaged and the text on each page was long enough to hold my daughter’s attention

· Diversity of characters sends a powerful, yet subtle message on inclusivity – stories like this help our little ones embrace the diversity of our world and accept others as they are, without judgment; after all, we are all equal in the eyes of God

· Biblical quote at the beginning – the message is reflected in the entire story and I think that it also reflects the author’s beliefs; here is a story that places an emphasis on loving others as they are, addressing so much of what our world needs right now

· Beautiful illustrations – they bring the story to life and make the whole reading experience more delightful.

Verdict:

This is a beautiful book! We loved the story and the message it sends, and I believe it would be a nice addition to any home library. It could also be used by teachers to educate and empower children on the topical bullying. Well done!
