A children’s book with a powerful message: we all feel the need to belong. The author highlights the value of religion in our lives, starting with the childhood period, and brings together two important themes, embracing our individuality and accepting others as they are.
My thoughts:
The story regards a little girl who feels that she is different from her friends. They spend their Sunday mornings going to church, while her family does a wide range of other activities, such as hiking, playing tennis, or reading the paper.
She is conflicted and plucks the courage to ask her parents about this matter. Realizing that children can stand a lot to benefit from going to church, they decide to change their Sunday routine. At church, she meets other children, finding it easy to form new, meaningful friendships.
I think children can stand a lot to gain from reading this book, not only because it can teach them about the benefits of religion, but also because it offers a valuable lesson. We all feel the need to make friends and integrate in a community. The story shows how difficult it can be for a child to deal with loneliness, and how big of a role parents play in shaping the kids’ everyday lives.
Verdict:
This was an interesting read, and I believe children will easily relate to the story. Beautiful illustrations bring the story to life, but the strength lies in the lessons it offers. It is perfectly fine to be different and celebrate our individuality above all else. I liked the subtle indication that parents have the power to shape the life of their children, and help them find guidance in the right place.
