A book about love and friendship, which has reminded me of old friends and how life can take you in such different directions. I have discovered it after watching the Netflix series, and it felt like I was reading a different story. My review does not contain spoilers, so you can read it without worry.
My thoughts:
Whenever I hear about a book like this, a must-read, I think twice before taking the decision to add it my shelf. I haven’t read any other book written by Kristin Hannah, and I am definitely not a fan of the genre. However, I liked the series and I felt tempted to make the ultimate comparison – which was better: the book or the movie?
The story inside the book differs from the one Netflix portrayed, but you’ll have to discover the differences on your own. I found the friendship between Kate and Tully to be honest and real, and I liked how the author did her best to create two characters so opposite from one another.
Tully is an achiever, yet all she ever wants is to be loved and approved. Unfortunately, she will reach her dream of success, only to discover how lonely it can be at the top. Kate, on the other hand, is a quiet person, who is prepared to live an ordinary existence. She might feel eclipsed by her friend, but only up to a point. Motherhood will balance the discrepancy in some way.
I followed their story, often thinking about my own female friends and how we have gathered a lot of moments together. There were plenty of parts in which the story did not unfold as I expected, and I got the feeling a book without drama would not be as popular. I guess we really do not want a happy ending after all.
Verdict:
Don’t read this book because it is popular. Read it if you share a strong friendship with someone, and you want to remind yourself of the important role it plays in your life. Whether you are Kate or Tully, one thing is certain: you have someone who cares for you, only a call away. My opinion is this book will make you embrace your best friend, never letting go!
