[Book Review] Gina and the Marines, [Author] James Roberts

An inspiring book about a little girl who suffers from cystic fibrosis. This is one of my daughter’s favorite books and it doesn’t surprise me, given that the story is about showing strength, toughness, and bravery.

My thoughts:

I love the books written by James Roberts because they hold inspiring stories between their pages. “Gina and the Marines” presents the story of a girl who has been diagnosed with a severe condition, cystic fibrosis. While in the hospital, she is visited by three marines. They have volunteered to visit the little patient and cheer her up. As life would have it, they will end up learning just as much from her as she will from them.

What did I like about the book?

· The courage of the author to take such a difficult diagnosis and transform it into an inspiring story. It gave me the opportunity to talk to my daughter about being sick and why we need to go to the hospital.

· The idea of adults learning lessons on courage and strength from children. Children who suffer from chronic conditions such as cystic fibrosis can teach us a thing or two about finding the will to go on.

· Each marine had his own strength of character but they all presented one common trait, the desire to help others during tough moments and I believe this kind of support is invaluable.

· Friendship as the center of the story. The author wanted to show that you can get through hard times as long as you are surrounded by people who love and care for you.

· The positive tone. Cystic fibrosis is a condition that affects many children and I liked that the author created a story with a positive tone. His message, as always in his books, is: “always look on the bright side of life”.

Verdict:

We loved this emotional story and I have a feeling you will love it as well. It is the kind of read that will make you take your child in your arms, and say how much you love him or her. From a practical perspective, it might also be useful in sparking a serious conversation about chronic health conditions in children, more specifically, cystic fibrosis.
