Grit (def.): Courage and determination despite difficulty (Cambridge Dictionary)
A self-help book centered around the concept of grit, which shows how big of a role passion has in achieving success. Angela Duckworth refines this personality trait, presenting it through her personal lens. Have you fallen down? Your resilience can make all the difference.
My thoughts:
I found the book to be insightful and real. Even though there is a lot of information about psychology and personality determinants, I was able to see beyond all that. Grit can help you pursue outstanding achievements, no longer leaving your efforts to talent or luck.
What predicts success? Explore this subject together with the author, and enjoy how she counteracts widespread misconceptions. Discover what makes you fight for the things you want to obtain, and why you should always keep going. The author’s own story is blended with mountains of research, but it is practically impossible not to notice how hard she fought against preconceived notions.
Grit stems from a combination of passion and perseverance, the author tells us. Inspiring stories will pull you inside the book, and without even realizing, you will begin to feel more motivated. I liked the fact she proposes the idea that grit can help one reach as high as the people who are endowed with natural talents.
My favorite part was the one in which she talks about Ta-Nehisi Coates, journalist and winner of the MacArthur genius awards. He talks about writing as being equal to repeated failure, highlighting the importance of never giving up. You just wake up and refine your work from the previous day, no matter how difficult it may seem.
Verdict:
This is a great book for anyone looking to discover what is grit, and how it can change your life. I liked how she said “effort counts twice”, and I encourage you to take the Grit Scale and find out how gritty you actually are. There are plenty of suggestions on how you can become more passionate and perseverant, putting your grit to good use.
