[Book Review] I’m Hungry, [Author] James Roberts

A beautiful children’s book from one my favorite authors, centered around the theme of family. Ever the talented writer, James Roberts introduces children to a story they will remember for a long time to come, a story about love and how we can be there for our children.

My thoughts:

I love stories that bring our children to emotional topics, reminding us, the adults, of how life used to be when we were kids ourselves. The author relies on “hunger” as a powerful metaphor, proving an important point: we are all hungry for the love our parents offer, and all the things that come with that powerful overflow of emotion.

This is a sweet tale about nourishment, and how we should concentrate on the parts of life that make us happy. As a parent, you cannot read this story and not want to hug your child right away. Empty tummies need food, but we must never forget how much our little ones need our presence, love, and comfort. The illustrations, bearing the trademark style of Svetlana Klakina, brought the story to life and added to the delight of the reading experience.

These were some of my favorite lines:

“What are you really hungry for?...

Well, maybe you’re really hungry for a big, warm hug.”

“I’m hungriest for some dad time”

“Dad fed me an awesome bedtime story, a beach sunrise and a sky full of stars.”

Verdict:

What a lovely, emotional book! I absolutely loved the story and the nourishment it offered, and I think this is exactly the kind of book your child will remember reading as an adult. At the end of the book, the author invites children to think about their own “hunger”, as well as unleash their creativity by drawing a beautiful sunrise and a sky full of stars. A brilliant book from beginning to end!
