[Book Review] Identity, [Author] Arundhati Sahoo

A story about fighting against stereotypes imposed by a judgmental society. The book was my first LGBTQ+ read, and an interesting one. I appreciate stories that are written in the form of journeys, and I always wonder if the end will be the one the main character(s) expected.

My thoughts:

It was an interesting read, with well-written characters and a gripping storyline. The attention to detail was a welcoming surprise, and I liked how the author created a story in which characters fight for acceptance. I believe it is in the power of an author to deliver stories that are empowering, especially when it comes to such a sensitive topic as sexual identity.

Here we have a story that includes a unique assortment of characters: a eunuch, a prostitute and a woman with a tragic sexual past. The book delivers a glimpse into less-discussed aspects of society, such as prostitution and forced marriage. It is filled with emotion, allowing the reader to easily understand what the characters are going through.

I applaud the author for coming up with a thought-provoking story, one which calls for empathy above all else. Sunny and Sane struggle to overcome the prejudices of society, fighting against all odds for their identity. I liked that the author presented her own views interspersed throughout the story, sending a powerful message about acceptance.

Verdict:

This was an intriguing read, one which showed how modern society still has a long way to go until accepting people for who they really are. The author did not shy away from approaching such a difficult topic, her story proving that we should not judge people based on the cover.
