A wonderful book about acceptance and friendship. I had already read the other books signed by this author, “A Through Z Of What If” and “Sammie the Hungry, Angry, Never Satissssfied Snake” to my daughter and she was excited to see another great story from Rebecca Porter.
My thoughts:
I love books that send a powerful message and this particular one did not disappoint. The idea behind the story is beautiful! In a community of elves that are all the same, a unique elf is born. Throughout the story, we can see that none of the other elves understood that she is different, but that didn’t mean they could not play with her. Things change with one friend who dares to say hello.
Books like this can be used to educate younger children about disabilities, and how we should accept others exactly as they are. My daughter was already familiar with Down’s syndrome and I taught her to always look behind a diagnosis. We are all different and the beauty of life comes from embracing individuality. Friendships do not have to be based on anything other than the desire to connect and share wonderful movements.
This heartwarming story is accompanied by hand-drawn illustrations and I am sure children will adore them. A big thank you to the author for adding her story to the book, Kiara must be proud for having served as inspiration for such a great book. The dedication says everything: “For my amazing daughter Kiara, whose unique differences changed my world.”
Verdict:
We absolutely loved this book! I think it would represent the perfect addition to any home library, but it could also be used by teachers to spread awareness about various disabilities and how we should always accept others as they are. Being different is perfectly fine, and it is up to us to teach our children to see beyond a diagnosis. Early education is key to an open mind and I applaud Rebecca Porter for writing such a wonderful book!
