[Book Review] Kazandra Reloaded, [Author] Frankie Shelford

A magical realism book, inspired by a tragic Greek myth. Borrowing elements from mythology and folk tales, it comes with a modern twist on all things classical.

What did I think of the book?

As a general rule, I love reading books written by indie authors, as they always have the most original ideas. In “Kazandra Reloaded”, I have discovered an interesting perspective on Greek myths, losing myself in the story.

Kazandra, the heroine of the story, is a well-contoured character and, throughout the book, you will definitely find yourself wanting to know what happens next. Will she be able to escape her curse? What will the future bring for a woman who is far from conventional? You will have to read the book to find out.

It was interesting to see Kazandra’s story presented in relation to an environment defined by political distress. I guess the author tried to show how desperate a strong woman can become in trying to be heard. The journey of self-discovery was intriguing, and I liked how much she fought to escape her past.

Favorite quote

“"The certainty of that moment it is all I need. I am entirely present there, wholly aware of my body and what is going through my veins. No thoughts are in my mind. It's just me and the radiant awareness of a vast emptiness awaiting. And, in that brief moment, I am giving my entire body up to the experience.”

Verdict

If you are into genres like magical realism or fairy tale fantasy, this book is the perfect read. You will find yourself to be pleasantly surprised upon reading about Kazandra and her pursuits. The modern take on a tragic myth is the strong point of this book, as well as the fact that the author included her original translations from Greek in the book. How cool is that?
