[Book Review] The Chosen Seven, [Author] Gill D. Anderson

A fast-paced thriller about an Iranian immigrant with sociopathic tendencies, who takes people hostage in a restaurant. The book delivers everything a reader might want in a thriller, including suspense, drama, action, and romance.

My thoughts:

I love a good thriller, especially if it is unpredictable and filled with unexpected twists. “The Chosen Seven” did not disappoint, delivering a well-written suspense. At the center of the story, we find Farzad Abed, an Iranian immigrant with sociopathic tendencies. Fueled by mania, he will end up taking people hostage in a restaurant. His uttermost desire is for people to speak about him, and his actions.

The hostages are randomly selected, as Farzad sees something in each and considers them worthy of being one of the “chosen seven”. How does the story unfold? You will have to read the book to find out. All I can say is that this is the kind of story that will take you on a rollercoaster ride of emotions.

What did I like about the book?

· Idea – an immigrant with sociopathic tendencies who takes people hostage in a restaurant – this is something we can relate to in modern society, and I think the author wanted to show how far such an individual would be willing to go, and how difficult it can be to control a hostage situation in which the hostage taker makes unreasonable demands.

· Mix of characters – from Jacob Brown, the fitness fanatic to Regina Terry, a woman who is not afraid of anything or anyone, we are introduced to the full variety of human personalities. They each bring their contribution to the story and it was interesting to see how their lives intertwined.

· Aftereffect – I loved that the author did not stop the story abruptly. She went the extra mile to explain the way in which the lives of the hostages changed. Her message: a traumatic event will almost always make you reconsider your choices up to that point.

· Backstories – each character was carefully introduced, revealing a wide range of weaknesses and flaws. Some dealt with infidelity and drama, while others were preoccupied by personal appearance, romantic future, etc. Their stories were interesting to follow, without overshadowing the main plot.

· Farzad’s monologues – I applaud the author for managing to show exactly what a sociopath might think. The wealth of details painted a vivid image, making it easy for me to immerse in the story.

Verdict:

If you love thrillers, you should definitely give this book a try. Gill D. Anderson is a talented writer, capable of delivering a nail-biting story that is anything but predictable. Her writing style is natural, and I loved how she took a relatable subject and turned it into a story to reveal what certain people are capable of!
