[Book Review] The House at Strone, [Author] Claire Nielson

A wonderful adventure story, perfect for the old and young alike. Written in the style of “The Railway Children” and based on real events, “The House at Strone” represents the perfect summer read. The beautiful black and white illustrations, done by the author herself, add to the delight of the reading experience.

My thoughts:

I absolutely loved this book! The nostalgia of childhood is present throughout the book, and I think the author really poured her heart into the story. Without giving too much away, I am going to tell you a bit about “The House at Strone”. Three children – Claire, John, and Elsa – end up spending their summer alone, in old house, by the sea. Little do they know, but their summer will be filled with both mysteries and adventures.

Recommended for children between the ages of 7 and 12, this story is exceptionally written. I read it in one sitting, because I was curious to see what will happen and I just couldn’t put it away. Claire Neilson, the author, makes it easy for the reader to feel like he/she is there, part of the group. I loved how she gave each of the children a unique voice, and how she created a universe for them to spend this bit of their childhood. While reading the story, it somehow feels like you are seeing them, joining their post-war reality.

Indeed, we live in a world where it’s hard to imagine how things used to be back then. I belong to a different generation, and I come from another culture, so the bits about post-war Scotland were interesting to follow. From a different perspective, I think it’s every child’s dream to have such adventures. The author did a great job in highlighting the resilience and naïve innocence of children; even with their mother in the hospital, surrounded by the post-war reality, they are able to have fun. The lesson? Make the most of what you have, a lesson we should also learn and remember.

Verdict:

I always enjoyed books that are based on actual events and this particular story will remain close to my heart. I loved the backdrop, the Scottish Highlands, with lochs, braes, and banks. The story was fast-paced and I was drawn to all the characters, both young and old. I only hope the author will write a sequel, as I think there is a lot of potential for a series. Highly recommended!
