A wonderful story about accepting others as they are, without judging them by appearances. My daughter was so happy to discover that Brandi Smeltzer has published another book, as “Oh Deer!” is one of her favorites.
My thoughts:
Welcome to Larvadale! The story, as you might deduct from the title, is about the new bug in town. As the author points out, life was comfortable in that town, until someone new came to “disturb” everything. I do not want to give too many details away, but I have to applaud the author for choosing such a unique insect as her main character. A velvet ant, also known as Dasymuttila occidentalis or the wingless female wasp – to me, it was a complete surprise, one which I enjoyed very much.
I love books that blend fun with education, and this particular story definitely offered the best of both worlds. Kids can learn about stereotypes and how wrong it can be to judge someone by their appearances. Unfortunately, the other bugs will make the newcomer feel bad and lonely, until a particular situation will help them understand how they should never have jumped to conclusions. It was cool to see the fun facts about the velvet ant at the end of the story, and my daughter’s interest in insects grew as well, which was great to see.
Nature is a topic dear to the heart of the author, as I have seen from her previous book. For me, as a parent, this is an important theme to discover through books. With “The New Bug in Town”, I had the opportunity to talk to my daughter about the insect world and especially the velvet ant. How great is that? I love how kids’ books appeal to parents and their inner child, and I can still learn new things at this age.
Verdict:
Brandi’s story is perfect for kids and adults alike! I am sure everyone will want to visit Larvadale and see the cause for all the ruckus. The decision to choose the velvet ant is brilliant, we loved every bit of the story, including the fun facts!
