[Book Review] The Secret of Plants in the Environment, [Author] Rishikesh Upadhyay

A complete and detailed book about plants, which centers on the environment and how these are forced to adapt to the changing climatic conditions. The author discusses the impact of environmental changes in detail, highlighting adaptation mechanisms of various plants. Photographs add to the overall value of this non-fiction guide.

My thoughts:

I found this book to be interesting and relatable to the context of climatic changes we are facing nowadays. The author discusses how the survival of plants, especially in their early life stages, is often affected by such changes, as well as stress. This guide is the result of teaching and researching for the department of botany at a college in India, and I liked the depth of detail the author offered.

Many of the topics you will find discussed in this book match the problems our world deals with on a daily basis. Deforestation, extreme temperatures, pollution… all of these contribute to lower plant yields, and in result to hunger. Plants are forced to endure severe drought, exposure to chemical agents and mechanical stress, constant floods and so on. Where is our world heading? Read the book and find out the author’s perspective on the matter.

This guide is well-organized, providing a wealth of information on the worlds of plants and the challenges these are facing. I liked the addition of photographs, and the various explanatory details associated to them. The book delivered the perfect blend between the history of plant biology and modern theories on climate change. I believe this would be a good choice for those who are looking to expand their knowledge on plants, students included.

Verdict:

If you are interested in finding out more about the fragile relationship between plants and the environment, I believe this is the perfect book. The book explores topics that are relevant to our context, including climate change, and it addresses the challenges plants face nowadays. On a more subtle note, I think the author wanted to show that not only plants are threatened, but our existence as a whole.
