[Book Review] The Unknown Love, [Author] Catherine Moore

A horror novella guaranteed to give you chills, with a recommended reading age between 11 and 18 years. The author introduces us to an absorbing piece of ghost fiction, with a strong female character at the center.

Overview

Moya is a typical teenager, and her life seems to border on perfection. Her grandmother falls ill and she will go to stay with her, only to find herself in an old creepy mansion. It does not help that the house is haunted by ghastly spirits, but the girl will try to raise above the occasion and save the people she cares about.

Day by day, Moya notices dark secrets coming to the surface. People around her begin to die, and there are strange things happening inside the mansion. It becomes clear to her the house is cursed, with dreadful spirits having been awoken. They are after her soul, and they will not hesitate to crush anyone who has the courage to step foot in the dreadful mansion.

How is the girl connected to a past that happened a long time ago? And why does a spirit think she is his long-lost bride? You will have to read the book to find out.

Verdict

I found myself eager to know what happens next, turning one page after the other. The author delivers a well-constructed novella, with Moya doing anything it takes to protect the ones she loves. She is a strong character, trying to overcome the curse and save both herself, and the tormented souls arising from the past.

“The Unknown Love” is a hair-raising, spine-tingling story, and I loved the richness of detail. The author made you felt like you were there, using common clichés to draw attention to potentially-scary moments. As this is the first book in a series, I cannot to see what happens next.
