A young writer from Nigeria presents his story, proving that people who live in impoverished areas can rise above their condition and fight for their education. Like with the other book I have read from this author, I found the writing style to be simple but deeply evocative.
My thoughts:
This was one inspiring story to read, drawing attention to the fact that people in Nigeria are extremely poor, living with just a few dollars per day. The author describes himself as “one of the children of the transition”, making reference to the fact that many Nigerians have left the rural areas for major towns. He credits his writing voice and unique insight to the ability to experience both worlds.
His story highlights topics that Nigerians confront with on a regular basis, including poverty and the struggle to survive. However, I think that his book ultimately highlights the hope to thrive. From growing up to the days at the university, you will see that he had a difficult life but he never gave up. Between college years, he worked at a construction site, and the few dollars he earned allowed him to have food.
We are so used to having everything that we rarely give a moment’s thought about what happens in underdeveloped countries. Thanks to this book, I was reminded of the problems we should all fight against, such as the ever-growing poverty and the lack of opportunities people from Nigeria struggle with. The author has fought hard to overcome all these challenges, and his story is a true testament to his achievements.
Verdict:
If you are looking to read a book that is both inspiring and evocative of current reality, you should give this story a true. The author stands at the true voice of the people from his country, offering the real image of how life is there. Living on less than two dollars a day, working in constructions to put yourself through university, worrying about what you are going to eat… I loved the honesty behind this book!
