A wonderful book about a little girl who hates the letter “R”, as she has trouble pronouncing it. I had already read “A Dog’s Bucket List” by Karen Olson, and I was excited to read another beautiful story written by her.
My thoughts:
Meet Parker, a little girl who struggles to pronounce the letter “R”, feeling embarrassed by her impediment. She agrees to see a speech therapist to overcome her issues, spending an entire summer engaged in word and spelling games. In the end, her therapist will ask her to walk up to a cafeteria employee and ask a very important question. Where are the candy bars?
What a great idea for a story! There are many children who struggle to pronounce this letter and I am confident this book will be of much help to them. Young readers will see that Parker cannot pronounce the letter, dealing with mixed emotions. She even asks herself what’s so good about the letter, or if it wouldn’t have been better for someone to erase it from the alphabet!
At the same time, they will see how the little girl manages to overcome her speech impediment, all thanks to the support she receives from people who love and care for her. This is a great teaching tool about overcoming challenges, written in a clever style, with fun and bright illustrations. Kids will have a lot of fun pronouncing the “R” words, drawn out in hilarious ways.
Verdict:
My daughter loved this book! As a parent, I believe it represents a great choice for children who suffer from similar speech impediment, as it teaches them that such challenges can be overcome with adequate encouragement and support. The educational activities at the book of the book are great and it was interesting to discover that the story was inspired by the author’s own childhood. Well done!
