[Book Review] A Pearl from Every Oyster, [Author] Roy Cherian Cherukarayil

Every now and then, you come across a book that speaks to you, a book which is filled with tiny nuggets of wisdom, and you will feel as if that book was directly written for you. This book intrigued me right from the title, it sounded like such a beautiful metaphor. Inside, I discovered stories that have a universal validity, and I sense that the sensitivity with which they were written stems from the writer’s yearlong life experience. This is the kind of book that you read and remember your own life experience, a book about moments that define you as a person.

My opinion:

The author has captured me from the start, as he has a beautiful writing style. He manages to blend the descriptive narrative with emotions we have all experienced, and I am in awe of the level of detail he presents. He manages to transmit emotions effortlessly, that you cannot help but feel immersed in his stories. Each story has its own flavor, but I can guarantee that you will laugh and cry while reading this book. And, most importantly, you will find yourself reflecting on your own life, and what truly matters. The stories overflow with honesty and sensitivity, and the dash of humor is just enough to keep you interested.

The book seems to reflect the personal journey of the author, and I loved seeing him in the different stages of his life. In reading each story, you might be reminded of your own experience, and how life unfolded. Even though it is written in prose, the book holds a lot of poetry inside. You can follow the paths the author has followed, discover the people who have influenced him, and see what he had lost and gained. This might be a collection of short stories, but it comes across as an autobiography, one which is excellent written. Even the most banal experiences are turned into beautiful stories, and here is where the talent of the author lies.

I applaud the author for having the courage to pour his heart and soul onto the paper, this is not an easy thing to do. The journey captures you without even realizing, and while reading, I kept returning to the metaphor in the title. A pearl from every oyster. An experience from every moment in your life. How will you be in the end? No one can know, but one thing is certain. The experiences you are living will definitely shape who you turn out to be. Pearls of wisdom gathered in the infinite corners of yourself. And I thankful for having read this book, as it allowed me the opportunity to reflect back on my life and what a privilege it is to be alive. Poetic prose from a person of absolute refined sensitivity, it is simply impossible not to love this book.

Summary:

If you are looking for a book to make you feel a whirlwind of emotions, you have found it. This is the kind of book that stays with you long after you have read it, the book that helps you reflect on your own life and what truly matters. In reading the stories, you might be reminded of your biggest moments, the one who defined who you are. The best part? This is the kind of book that makes you want to be a better person. The author explores topics we are all familiar with, proving he is sensitive and humble, but also excited to see what each “oyster” has to offer. I absolutely love the book and everything it had to offer, highly recommended on my part.
