[Book Review] Alexander the Avoider, [Author] Nicole Filippone

A lovely story about a child who suffers from a sensory processing disorder, meant to educate others on the associated issues and potential solutions when one feels anxious or overwhelmed.

My thoughts:

I loved how the author explained the sensory processing disorder from a child’s perspective. The book can be used to empower children who suffer from this condition, and also to explain to others what their needs are. I believe it might also help the adults in their lives understand life with sensory issues, and offer better support.

This is a very informative book, and the checklist at the end was a big plus, helping you determine whether a child is a sensory seeker, an avoider, or a mix. The overall tone was positive, and I found the story to be simple enough for anyone to understand the difficulties of living with a sensory processing disorder. The list of general calming strategies might also be useful for when children feel overwhelmed.

Verdict:

What a great book! The illustrations were spot on, with a lot of details, and the story heartwarming. I read it to my daughter and she loved it. I believe books like this make children who suffer from a sensory processing disorder feel like they are not alone, offering solutions on how to cope with various challenges. A useful resource for parents and teachers alike, and a valuable introduction to sensory issues!
