The debut book of Khaoula Djidel introduces the reader to the journey of Imane, offering a glimpse into the Algerian life and culture. Even though it still needs polishing, I looked at the story as the gem in the rough that it is, appreciating the author’s unique voice.
My thoughts:
I read this book and it reminded me of “The Alchemist”, the famous work of Paulo Coelho. There were many things that stuck with me, but I think one of my favorites parts was: “Try to moderate your life wisely, put in mind that every single action has a consequence after a period of time.”
It was also interesting to discover details about the Algerian traditions, with the story often including details on cultural expectations and challenges. Many people in Algeria lead a difficult life, dealing with hardships and impoverishment. The author’s story included many reflections on that kind of life, bordering on philosophical, and that added to the pleasure of the reading experience.
This is the kind of story that you will read without pausing, as you will want to find out how Imane’s life journey will turn out. From the pressure to get married to pregnancy, the story includes plenty of ups and downs to keep the reader engaged. The affirmations sprinkled throughout the book will make you reflect on life as well.
Verdict:
“Life sometimes is equated; it makes us live the worst, to be happy with the best at the end.” I highly recommend you to give this book a try, you will love it. Khaoula Djidel has a fresh voice and her introduction to Algerian culture will certainly leave you wanting for more.
