[Book Review] Creating Me!, [Author] Lynn Polin

An inspiring book! I love books that teach children about our world and how it functions. “Creating Me!” is a unique story, as it explains how IVF works, in simple terms that any child can understand.

My thoughts:

The author drew inspiration from her own life story, creating this wonderful book to help her daughter understand how she came into the world. I think it is not easy to explain to children how IVF works and I applaud the author for doing such a brilliant job.

Children are naturally curious and it is normal for them to reach a point where they want to know how they appeared into the world. If you have resorted to IVF and you are looking for a way to explain your conception story to your little one, this book is perfect. Most importantly, it comes from a loving mother who has dealt with infertility and IVF herself.

What did I like about the book?

· Subject in itself – I believe we need such books to teach our kids about overcoming life’s challenges, including in planning a family. I loved how the author managed to take a difficult subject such as IVF and transform it into such an emotional story.

· Customizable options – at the beginning of the book, you can add photos of your child, as well as a message, including the creation day and transfer date. Anyone who has gone through IVF can tell you that these are highly important dates, worth remembering.

· Lovely cutouts – the child can use them to personalize his or her creation story. These are great, as the little one can color and add them to the story.

· Spaces to fill in intimate details of your family-building journey – name of the doctor who performed the IVF procedure, embryo picture, child’s birthday, birth certificate information.

· Sensitivity with which the topic was approached – you can tell that the book was written from a place of love, with the author delicately choosing the most important bits of information about the IVF journey.

· Illustrations – it can’t have been easy to select them, especially since IVF is such a complex process. I think they match the story to perfection, showing both the practical and emotional aspects of having a baby through this procedure.

There were so many things I loved about this book! The part that stuck with me though was this: “It’s like planting a seed in a garden and watching a beautiful flower sprout and bloom.” What a beautiful way to describe the difficult and emotional conception story. This phrase also captures the emotional waiting process and the infinite happiness parents experience in meeting the baby they have dreamt of for so long!
