Detours: Unexpected Journeys of Hope Conceived from Infertility

A collection of honest and emotional stories, which will offer a glimpse into what it means to live with infertility and how hard it can be to reach a resolution that helps you feel fulfilled.

My thoughts:

I applaud each woman who has contributed to this book, for having had the courage and strength to talk about her experience, regardless of the difficulties encountered or the resolution reached. Reading about each infertility journey and the lessons these women have learned, I felt quite emotional. I liked how each woman followed her own path, and I believe that books like this reflect the broad spectrum of infertility resolutions.

All of these women met through RESOLVE, the National Infertility Association, but their bond remained just as strong over the years. Their friendship is inspiring and it stands as proof that infertility feels less daunting when you have a healthy network of support. I also liked that the book included a man’s perspective, proving how difficult it can be to balance one’s career with the exhausting demands of fertility treatments. The story was written in a heartfelt tone, with a suggestive title: “The Balancing Act”.

Sue Johnston, who is known as “Sue the Glue” to her group of friends, has gathered these stories to inspire other women who struggle with infertility. This book was written as a tribute to their friendship and also as a gift to their kids. The brave stories serve as a reminder that each infertility journey is unique, even when the resolution is different from what one has imagined or dreamed of in the first place.

At the end of the book, you will find a few closing thoughts from the authors, dedicated to anyone on the infertility journey. There is also a section of useful hints, on how to help someone who struggles, things you can say and, most importantly, things you should not say, so as to avoid hurting someone’s feelings. The glossary of infertility terms is very useful, especially if you are just starting down this road.

Verdict:

An emotional book about infertility and the influence it plays over a couple’s life, which will teach you that you have your own journey to follow and that it is possible to reach a solution that helps you feel happy with where you are.
