Every time I hear Gentleman Jim is about to release another book, I jump with excitement. My daughter loves his books, and we had the honor of reading “Grandma’s Family Soup” together. It was a lovely experience!
My thoughts:
“Some families are just like soup” – that is so true! In a heartwarming tale, we are reminded of the love that comes from having our family together to share a meal. Seeing the grandma as a main character reminded me of my own, and how she used to prepare all that delicious food for us on Sundays.
My daughter related to her own grandma, and she thoroughly enjoyed the lovely illustrations from the brilliant Svetlana Klakina. The author has used a number of adjectives to describe both ingredients and family members, which was nice. Uncles are “corny”, aunts are “spicy”, cousins are “nutty” – fun, fun, fun!
Once again, like with the other books he has written, the author teaches his young reader an important lesson: family is everything, and grandmothers are the best. The book is perfect for the times in which we are living, missing our own families and I think it will help children deal with such matters are well. I also found the questions at the end of the book to be a nice addition.
Verdict:
A wonderful book about family and love, and how we should accept people as they are. The story comes as an emotional tribute to grandmothers, the ones who keep the entire family together, but it also teaches children to embrace diversity and find acceptance in their own hearts. Great job!
