[Book Review] Granny’s Birthday Cake Won’t Go Out, [Author] Becci Murray

Granny is back and this time she has another challenge to overcome… her birthday cake won’t go out. Not without effort, the entire family will become involved in this conundrum, trying their best to handle a squillion candles. As it always happens, the more everyone tries to help, the more complications will occur. Poor Granny! Isn’t anyone who will be able to tame her birthday flames?

My opinion:

I love the books written by Becci Murray, and the Granny series is amazing! Written with quality humor and illustrated by the author herself, they always bring something new to the table. My daughter was excited to read this new book and she had quite the time while eagerly anticipating what would happen next. The cast of characters is just perfect, from Granny who complains she cannot put the candles out, to Grandpa who encourages others not to panic. We also have mother, dad, auntie, uncle… a whole family involved in dealing with a hilarious situation.

Becci Murray is a talented writer and my daughter adores her books. With this new story, we had plenty of laughs, and I could not help but notice the clever rhymes, which made the whole reading experience even more delightful. We embarked on a hilarious adventure, one which kept us hooked until the end. As an adult, you will definitely notice how much thought has been put into the story, from the actual storyline to the side comments. And what about the illustrations? They are spot on! The family presented in the book is actually blended, and I love this so much.

Be sure to read this book out loud! You will probably turn back to the story, just as we did, just to relive the funny moments. The chaos has a magnet-like effect and it is practically impossible not to join in the fun… as a matter of fact, my daughter had her own ideas of what Granny could do to finally put the candles out. I loved that the story concluded with a wonderful solution! My favorite part involved an elephant, but I am going to leave you to discover what happened on your own.

Verdict:

My daughter’s laugh said everything! This book was delightful, and we enjoyed seeing Granny again, as always with a challenge that required her entire family to be involved. The main message? Everything is resolved when we work together. Flowing rhymes, wonderful illustrations, cute side comments, quality humor, family… this story was amazing, from beginning to end! We loved it so much!
