[Book Review] How I adopted Rita, [Author] S. Y. Anokehi

A short novella about a young teacher and his life in Nigeria during the coronavirus pandemic. Even though written in a simple language, it brings forward the difficult existence of people who live in that country.

My thoughts:

Living in our comfortable bubble, we rarely think about poor countries and how hard life must be in those parts of the world. This young writer has written a book that deserves our attention, touching on a sensitive topic: Nigerian teachers have a tough time surviving on the meagre payment they receive. The coronavirus pandemic only made things worse, leading to unemployment and subsequently aggravating the already-existent impoverishment.

This novella is a semi-autobiographical work, and it is the story of a man who lives with just a few dollars per day. He is part of a social club, where men gather and discuss the events that happen each day. A lot of these discussions focus on poverty and the devastating effect of the corona pandemic. The social club reminded me of how people used to gather in the past, in my native country (Romania), in the countryside, to discuss their day and major events.

The young man is unable to connect with the other members of the social club, as their education level is lower and they are unable to understand the consequences of recent events. In an effort to rise above, he will let them be, rarely engaging in the daily talks. Instead, he will have these wonderful conversations with Rita, his adopted cat.

Verdict:

If you are looking for a book that speaks the truth, this is a great choice. I found this novella to be interesting, a unique read for us who often complain that our lives are not good enough. The author reminded me that there are countries in which people are really poor, leading difficult lives. He also showed how the coronavirus pandemic only made things worse, including for educated people, who are now struggling to survive. Well done!
