Christmas is slowly approaching, and we have already started our holiday-themed reads. My five-year-old daughter was so excited to come across this lovely book, especially since Lil Peter was already a favorite in our home. A story about sharing Christmas cheer? A sweet grandma to teach the meaning of Christmas? You can count us in! The book points out to the true meaning of Christmas, but it is also perfect for kids to discover the festive side, along the many yummy treats to be eaten. And the illustrations are just magical!
My opinion:
A visit to grandma is always a special experience, but somehow at Christmastime it becomes even more special. As Lil Peter and his brother, Marty, are spending their day with their grandma, they will discover the true meaning of giving, as the authors so wonderfully point out. I have to admit that I love the Lil Peter series and I was so excited to read this new book to my daughter. Christmas cheer is something we are all interested in, and I am glad to see a story that shows it from a different angle. This wonderful story has helped me teach my daughter how to spread this Christmas cheer, so I am grateful.
While reading this story, it is practically impossible not to smile. While it is true that the book mentions the Bible and Jesus, I feel that the sentiment behind it is universal, regardless of one’s religion or spiritual beliefs. We loved the illustrations, they really do bring the story to life, and make the whole reading experience so festive. I think this is the kind of book that kids will treasure for many years to come, especially as they grow older and learn the true meaning of Christmas themselves. We also loved the fun activities at the back, there are some pretty great suggestions in there.
I always say that a good story is the one that brightens your day. As I cuddled with my daughter and read this story, I felt exactly like that. We were drawn to both the story and the festive illustrations, and I think the authors managed to deliver a simple, yet powerful message, one that children will understand and remember. Christmas is, without doubt, my favorite holiday, and I am trying to teach my daughter about its importance. We talk about kindness and generosity, and how family makes everything more beautiful. This book is an excellent conversation starter and be sure to check out how candy canes are actually called. So fun!
Verdict:
This book is so beautiful! We loved both the story and the illustrations, feeling the festiveness of the Christmastime already. Grandma is adorable and her lessons about the Christmas cheer are wonderful, not to mention how she calls the candy canes, so fun and endearing! A story that brings somehow the nostalgia of childhood for adults, while delivering an important message to children. If there is something to be learned from Lil Peter, it is that kindness make the world more beautiful.
