A book about life, seen through the perspective of an “optimist”, but one who has been suffering from a chronic disease for more than three decades. Parkinson’s disease has become second nature to this amazing actor, and yet he never made anything but lemonade out of what life served him.
Overview:
Within the pages of this book, you will find a collection of personal stories about the author. He describes in detail his relationship with Parkinson’s disease and other health-related issues, considering ageing as a process and how much of a difference having a strong support network can make.
Thoughtful without intention, and funny to perfection, Michael J. Fox talks about time and mortality, reflecting on the three pillars of our existence: love, health, and loss. From negotiating with his brain for every step to dealing with invasive surgery and extensive rehabilitation, we are shown the journey of a man who never seems to quit.
In having to learn how to walk again, though, the author is ready to draw the curtain and say “that’s enough”. Will he stick to his trademark optimism? You will have to read the book to find out. A sure thing is that he has never lost that spark – somewhere in there, he is still Marty McFly, looking to travel back to the future.
My thoughts:
Upon diving into this book, I did not know what to expect. I loved Michael J. Fox as an actor, not only in his earlier roles but also in more recent ones. As an author, I would say, he is even better. He is not afraid of showing how difficult living with a chronic disease is, inspiring other people to become more resilient.
Appealing to life with both humor and gratitude, he talks about the sacrifices he had to make after being diagnosed with early onset Parkinson. Even more, he’s suffered from additional medical issues, which have forced him to take things from zero. Describing his kids as “time machines”, he serves an important lesson – the time to live is now.
