A lovely book about finding out who you are, set in a time where such issues where still considered taboo. The author does a brilliant job in drawing the reader in, the duality of plans adding to the delight of the reading experience.
My thoughts:
I have to admit that the first thing to draw my attention was the beautiful cover. Inside, however, I found a wonderful story, written in a flawless style. I kept reading, turning one page after the other, to discover how it turns out.
There were many things I liked about the book. The story bridged the past with the present, showing families as they are, imperfect and sometimes dysfunctional, yet owning up to the choices made. It was interesting to follow the simultaneous journeys of Margaret and her mother. This allowed me to notice how many things the two characters had in common.
The character of Margaret is strong and determined. Empowered by the discoveries in her diary, she is not afraid to disobey rules and look for her mother. Even if her search does not always lead her in the expected direction, she does not give up. I think she would make a role model for teenagers nowadays.
I think the author did a great job at drawing readers in her story, successfully captivating the essence of human emotion. As you read about Margaret and her journey, you cannot help but empathize, to imagine everything she must have felt and how difficult it was to deal with the truth. The story had plenty of twists and turns to keep me interested, and I would read it again, just to focus on the tiny details.
Verdict:
This was a brilliant story to read! I loved that it talked about adoption and how not all the stories turn out happy. Stories like this one reflect on a time when seeking one’s biological parents was frowned upon, showing the effect the whole situation had on the respective child. Well done!
