An incredible book that brings the worlds of science and geography together, teaching kids about the scientific practice of hypothesizing and the United Kingdom at the same time. With lovely illustrations signed by Tracey O’Keefe, The Hypotheses of Hippopotamus and Rhinoceros is the kind of book that is perfect for home and school libraries.
My thoughts:
What a cool idea for a book! Young readers are invited to join Hippopotamus and Rhinoceros in the science lab, as they present “hypotheses” about the countries of the United Kingdom (England, Ireland, Scotland, and Wales). Are you ready to discover the secret hypothesis Hippopotamus plans on sharing? The mystery is revealed in the book, you just have to read it.
I loved how the author said this book “is guaranteed to make tired mummies laugh”, she was absolutely right. I laughed out loud while reading the story to my daughter. Even though she was a bit too young to understand all of the concepts in the book, she did have some fun herself, trying to search the countries on the globe and even to pronounce some of the words she considered to be hilarious. I dare you to pronounce the Welsh words, you will have a lot of fun yourself!
It was interesting to see a book about science, written in a unique style, and brought to life by amazing illustrations. Written in rhyme, I think it will help kids get friendly with scientific methods and feel less intimated about STEM topics. The cultural facts about the United Kingdom and its countries are great, and how about the rap song added to help readers remember the definition of hypothesis? Brilliant decision.
Verdict:
This is a great book for young readers who are passionate about science and geography, with beautiful illustrations and interesting cultural facts. My favorite bit was: “Look out for mummy rhinos soon after they’ve had NEW-BORNS. It’s reasonable to hypothesise…/That ‘mummies of baby rhinos will be TOO TIRED to wear FAKE EARS and STICK ON HORNS!”.
