[Book Review] The Toads and the Tadpoles, [Author] Gentleman Jim

A wonderful book for young children, with fun and colorful illustrations. The author wraps an important message into a colorful adventure, teaching little ones that bullying is never an appropriate behavior.

The educational value of the book stems from two directions. On the one hand, kids can explore life cycles and see how a toad grows up from a tadpole. Second, we can see the difficult topic of bullying addressed through humor.

I found the playful tale to be suitable for my three-year old, but I also believe this book could be a useful add to the collection of older children. Even teachers could use it as a preschool reading book, especially to introduce young minds to bullying. One can easily strike up a conversation on this topic with the help of this fun book.

Here we have a short but meaningful story, which any kid will enjoy. My daughter took delight in the tadpoles, but she was too young to understand they were being rude. As an adult, though, I tried to explain to her what was happening, and I believe she understood the message after all.

Verdict:

At first glance, you might be tempted to say this is a simple children’s book. You will have to read for yourself to see but I believe it offers so much more. The author makes it easy for kids to understand the transformation of tadpoles, and he also incorporates the discomforting topic of bullying with success. A great read, and I guarantee you will find yourself smiling upon seeing the tadpoles becoming toads and loving their newfound self!
