[Book Review] Total Departure, [Author] Andrew Reeves

A science-fiction book that takes you on a fantastic journey. The tale of a teenager who takes one step in the wrong direction, only to discover it was the beginning of the rest of his life.

Synopsis:

David is a teenager, who lives on a military base where experiments are being performed, in an attempt to achieve time travel. By his own doing, he becomes the victim of a failed experiment and his mind is now separated from his physical mass, by one hundred years.

His mind has traveled to the future, and now he is trapped in a house, located on the site of the former time chamber. There, he will meet Mary Brown, the girl who will change everything. David will battle the desire to remain where he is, while considering his undeniable link to the past.

Someone will travel back from the distant future to rescue David, after discovering records of the time travel experiment. Does David want to be rescued? And what will happen to him and Mary? You will have to read the book to find out.

My thoughts:

I liked how the author went to great lengths to construct richly-detailed worlds, offering clear proof of his extraordinary imagination. The connection to pets is, in my opinion, a subtle address to the emotion of attachment we experience as children.

He painted the catastrophic image of the future with genius, and yes, this is where humanity is headed. The future will most likely be defined by war and fear, weapons and control. David, the main character, is well-constructed and I enjoyed the intense desire to make it on his own, the dare of youth is simply undeniable. As for the romantic side of the story, this was just delightful – humans are simply willing to risk everything in the name of love.

Embedded in a world of fantasy, the author shows us how the past can help the future. I found myself reading the book in a single breath, taking delight in the story and the concepts of time travel, dual existence and total departure. David’s world is fascinating and the fast-paced action at the end of the book is just the perfect way to finish this reading journey. It does leave you thirsty for more, so perhaps we will get to see a sequel from the author.

Verdict:

If you are passionate about science fiction and time travel, this is the perfect book for you to read. It has everything, from fantasy to emotion, and you will never find a more complex character than David. The consequences of time travel are wrapped in an exciting story, and the main hero’s dual existence adds to the overall delight. This is the kind of book that hooks you from the first page!

About the author:

UK-based writer Andrew Reeves aims to inspire his readers with stories they won't forget. In his pursuit to be creative, Andrew is many things: author, screenwriter, poet, composer, songwriter, musician, designer, cartoon illustrator and proofreader to name a few. In addition to novel writing, Andrew has written several screenplays and short stories of varying genres, including tales for younger readers, and has proudly co-created over 3,600 silly words with crazy definitions, compiled as a nonsense dictionary which he and a fellow co-writer hope will very soon see the light of day.

Andrew also spent a handful of years designing downloadable multiplayer levels for Star Wars PC game Jedi Academy under his pseudonym of Several Sided Sid, faithfully re-creating iconic scenes from the movies and creating brand new environments for the gaming world to explore and use as skirmish arenas for online battles. Andrew's original creative love has always been his writing, and it's the pen he wields now instead of the sword (hey, it's mightier).

Andrew recently had his short comedy sketch The Wall printed in the inaugural issue of Scaffolding Literary Magazine, published by Jalapeño Publishing, and is thrilled to say his tiny little fairytale screenplay THE LEGEND OF STONY BOB AND STONY BILL achieved Semi Finalist position at the Shortcut 100 Chicago Short Film Festival 2017. He is currently hoping to take his Legend to the big screen!

Andrew is the author of five books currently, with many more on the way!
