[Book Review] Twin Crowns, [Authors] Catherine Doyle & Katherine Webber

Two sisters. One crown.

A book that delights from the first page to the very last. “Twin Crowns” brings together adventure, magic, and romance, providing readers with the perfect “escapist” fantasy. I thoroughly enjoyed the cleverness of the story, turning one page after the other to find out what happens. The story is equally magical and clever, surprising the reader every step of the way.

My thoughts:

Twin princesses separated at birth. A battle for the crown of Eana. Unexpected allegiances. Witches that bear different “gifts”, acting as seers or healers… What’s not to like? Meet Wren and Rose, the princesses whose destinies could not be more different. While one is raised as the crown princess, the other has been among witches all of her life. She is raised to kidnap her sister and steal the crown, so she can avenge her parents and restore the rightful way in her kingdom.

I could share many more details about the story in itself, but I think it would be for the best for you to discover them on your own. All I can say is… prepare to be surprised! I fell in love with the world the authors have created and it was so great to follow the story from two different points of view. Both Wren and Rose have strong voices, standing as proof that women will always fight for their beliefs, especially when it comes to prejudice. Wren has been raised as a free spirit and she does not hesitate in doing what it takes to achieve her goals. Rose, on the other hand, is cautious and looks at things from all possible angles. However, she is just as determined as her sister when it comes to becoming queen.

At a closer look, you can see that each of the sisters are following their own journey of growth, discovering that things rarely seem as they are. They each have a male character to complicate matters, and I just loved the spinning web of romance, especially since it did not overpower the main theme. War is presented in a world of witches and royals, with some dark moments that remind the reader that life is never perfect. In the end, we are left with a fantasy that offers the perfect escape. Plenty of humorous moments, twists and turns to keep readers engaged, and definitely a sash of sarcasm to make the story worth pursuing until the end… a major cliffhanger, but nonetheless worth getting to!

There were so many things I loved about the book, it would be hard to list them all here, particularly as I do not want to offer any spoilers. I loved the way Rose reflects into Wren, and the other way around, they are twin sisters after all. The story delivers a captivating world, with characters that are great to follow, but flawed nonetheless. I appreciated that the authors wanted to show the truth of human nature, and I think this made the story even more relatable. The world of the witches is just enticing, and I am sure others will enjoy the stories about them. As for the secondary characters, these only make the journey of the twin sisters even more delightful to follow.

My favorite quote:

“Rose had to get back. And yet… As much as she hated to admit it, a small part of her was enjoying the adventure of being out of Eshlinn, of exploring parts of Eana she had never seen… Places she might never have known. Sometimes, in the quiet of the palace, when Rose felt the strands of her destiny tightening around her, she thought she might suffocate. There was something about the desert air – and this hot spring – that felt almost like an antidote. It soothed a part of her she didn’t know was ill.”

Verdict:

What an amazing story! It felt like a really good cake, with every layer bringing something different, a flavor to be experienced and enjoyed to the max. Diving into the world created by these amazing authors, the time seemed to stop and all I wanted was to find out what happens… I can’t wait for the second book and I hope everyone will get to read it. Who will wear the crown? For now, this is my secret!
