[Book Review] Barnabee Gets a B: Barnabee, the Perfectionist, [Author] Cazzy Zahursky

Barnabee is back! This time, a math quiz will cause him to become terribly upset. Is a B the end of the world? For someone dealing with perfectionism, it may very well be. Cazzy Zahursky offers a story that addresses a common issue many children often deal with nowadays, in a unique manner, as always. The wonderful story is accompanied by illustrations done by the author herself, which are quite delightful. If you are looking for a story to teach your little ones about trying their best, then you have found it.

My opinion:

Barnabee is the cutest character, I am not surprised that kids love him so much! I think the idea behind this book is brilliant, as there are so many kids who deal with anxiety, just because they have got a lower grade on their tests. Perfectionism is often the issue behind all these fears, and I think it is important for kids to learn that their value is not connected to their grades. Barnabee learns how to calm himself and ask for help, which is amazing. The most important lesson to be learned from this book? Trying your best is indeed enough.

In truth, I think we need more stories that address perfectionism, one of the “modern diseases”. Unfortunately, educators and even parents reinforce this issue, instead of understanding that kids need to connect with their true selves and work on being happy instead. What a wonderful idea to portray Barnabee finding his own way, applying calming techniques, and learning how to contain his anxiety. This book is an amazing emotional tool, and I was so happy to read it together with my daughter.

The book is so cute and creative, just take your time to spot all the bee references, these just make the whole story even more entertaining. In my opinion, this book will appeal not only to kids, but also to adults, who might still remember the anxiety induced by tests. It is impossible to be the best all the time and we should never push our kids in that direction. On the contrary, we should teach them to accept their imperfect selves. I absolutely love this story and all the lessons it has to offer!

Summary:

Dear Barnabee, you get an A from us! The same for your wonderful creator and illustrator, we just love her books! I recommend this book to all the parents who are looking to raise their children into healthy adults, who do not fear breaking away from the expectations of today’s society, which often cause more harm than good. A beautiful story about doing your best and overcoming anxiety!
