We are back on Unicorn Island, loving this story filled with magic and adventure. This time, the star of the story is Bethany the Bananacorn, who loves nothing more than feeding monkeys. Where? Nowhere else than in the Rainbow-Berry Jungle! Unfortunately, the horrid Horn Snatcher is back, ready to… well, no spoilers for you, just read the story to discover. I can guarantee that you will love the story just as much as we did, as it involves unicorns, magic, and even pie. What kind? Banoffee pie, of course!
My opinion:
I don’t know how she does it, but Becci Murray is capable of even creating a villain that you will end up loving. As I read this story to my daughter, I could not help but notice that the Horn Snatcher is kind of an underdog, almost rooting for him. However, I quickly returned to reality, rooting of course for Bethany and her friends. Bethany the Bananacorn is helped by her friends, Tabitha the Toffeecorn and Chloe the Carrotcorn. All the characters in the book are so much fun, my daughter found them delightful. We read a bit from the book before going to bed, having the time of our lives.
After reading the first book in the series, we were hooked. I think these books are brilliant, with the author offering exactly the kind of stories kids at this age love. She has an incredible imagination and the ability to bring such stories to life is unparalleled. I am also in awe with the unique world she has created, putting so much thought into every tiny detail. Just pay attention to the name of the characters, not to mention the setting of the story, you will understand what I’m talking about. The writing flows to perfection and the dialogue is entertaining, as if everyone in the story was right here, in front of us.
Becci has also sprinkled some wonderful lessons for kids to learn, with focus on the power of friendship, but also something else. Imagine jokes being the key! The story is hilarious, and I absolutely love the illustrations, which are done by the author herself. It is thrilling to follow the mission and I could feel the author’s sense of humor shining throughout the story. Without even realizing, the Horn Snatcher became our favorite. Just look how he talks, it kind of reminded me of the BFG, who my daughter loves just as much.
Summary:
The book we read as children remains with us for the rest of our lives, so we might as well choose the right ones. I highly recommend the Unicorn Island books, including the one with Bethany the Bananacorn. This story was lovely and funny at the same time, and we fell in love with the delightful illustrations. As with the other book, there were some fun activities at the end, which my daughter enjoyed. We are now beyond excited to read the next one, time for an adventure with Amy the Applecorn!
