[Book Review] Bright Stars – Book 2, Chronicles of V, [Author] Tasche Laine

Teen fiction is a genre that I love, as it somehow bridges the world of innocence with the one of adulthood, where things are rarely simple. The second book in the “Chronicles of V” series was a cool read and I loved the fast pace of the story. With characters that are relatable and a suspenseful storyline, it draws the reader in from the first pages, having an addictive effect. What can you expect? A detective like no other, problems that anyone can relate to, twists and turns to keep you on your toes… all in all, an amazing reading adventure!

My opinion:

V is a teen who has seen her fair share of problems, having to deal with her mom suffering from cancer. She is now looking forward to getting her driver’s permit, but things will prove more complicated than expected. Her detective senses are on fire, as she is dealing with a suspicious driving instructor. Mysterious things seem to keep happening, including a lot of robberies in her neighborhood. Even one of her family heirlooms has disappeared! Will she be able to untangle the mystery? Well, I am not one for spoilers, do you will have to read the book to find out. All I can say is that you should be prepared for a page-turning read, an adventure like no other.

While reading this story, I fell in love with the writing style and the characters going through all the emotions we experience on a daily basis. The story shows that it is perfectly normal to feel both good and bad, and I so agree with this perspective. I think teens need stories that show imperfect lives, stories that teach them about resilience and how to keep one’s head above the surface. V is an excellent main character, always ready for a new challenge, but the story also reflects her values, most importantly the ones related to her family. She represents an excellent model for the teens of today, teaching them what matters the most.

The author has managed to take serious topics such as PTSD and cancer, and wrap them into a story that is quite enjoyable to read. The story is beautifully written and has a raw quality to it, which just goes to prove that the author has a way with words. Far from being predictable or boring, it keeps the reader hooked, especially if one is a fine of detective stories. I also appreciated that the author included a recap of the first book, this can be really helpful if you are reading the books at different periods of your live. In more than just one way, the story reminded me of simpler times, when people had other values and were more committed to personal relationships.

Verdict:

Young adult books are perfect for adults, as they cater to the inner teen, or so I believe. Tasche Laine has written a wonderful book, adding to the story that many readers have come to love. I was so impressed with the lessons the story has to offer, especially in terms of emotional resilience and family closeness. From a different perspective, the book is perfect for those who love a good mystery or are fans of detective stories. Be sure to read the first book in the series, I can guarantee you will love it. Great series!
