A new book to read feels very much like a treat and I was so excited to discover “Catch Up!” from Cazzy Zahursky. As I read her other books, “Cardboard Rosie” and “Perspective Detective”, I was certain that her latest release will be just as amazing. And I was right! My daughter loved the story, especially since it featured one of her favorite pastimes, having fun outside. The illustrations are just darling, and they just go to prove she is one talented lady!
My opinion:
What a fun book to read! A picnic day with the entire family, with plenty of sunshine and nature. A pet dog guaranteed to add to the fun of the outing. What will happen? Well, I do not want to give anything way, you will have to read the book to find out. All I can say is that the author did a great job with this story, both in terms of text and illustrations. Young bookworms have a lot to learn from this story, including on the importance of inclusivity. My daughter kept turning one page after the other, in order to see what happens next. She loved the insects in particular, while I found the play on words to be quite interesting.
While reading this story with my daughter, I could not help but think how much work goes into creating a new book. The author’s imagination shines throughout the entire story, and I think this is the kind of book that is best read out loud, preferably with impressions. Far from predictable, it encourages kids to use their own imagination, as they try to decide about the next use for the bottle cap. After finishing the book, we talked about the importance of repurposing different objects, how we all have to fight for a greener planet.
One of the most important lessons this book has to offer is that we all see life differently, according to our individual perspective, but this doesn’t mean we are right or wrong. I think kids need to learn that we each have our own lens and that is perfectly fine to maintain our perspective as it is. I absolutely loved the dynamic style in which the story was illustrated, it felt like we were part of the story, hearing everyone, from the squirrels to the frogs. A brilliant concept for a book and it doesn’t surprise me in the least that my daughter asked to read it over and over again.
Verdict:
Let’s read more books like this one! I loved how it highlighted the value of spending time together as a family, but it also showed that sometimes things do not go as planned. Kids needs stories that teach them how to handle the unpredictable, as well as stories that show them the importance of being in the open outdoors more. A big thumbs up for the illustrations and the cute text placement, they both brought the story to life. And what a cute idea to encourage kids to use their own imagination, so as to come up with other potential uses for the ketchup cap. Highly recommended!
