When I heard that two of my favorite authors are releasing a book together, I was so excited. My daughter loves their writing, and we knew that their new book is going to be amazing. This time, we were introduced to another unique Asian tradition, meaning the Mid-Autumn Festival. Let me tell you from the start that there are so many interesting things to be learned from this book. I think it is suitable not only for the children, but also for adults, reminding us once again how wonderfully diverse our world is, and how fascinating each culture is.
My opinion:
Starting with the beautiful cover, I must admit that I fell in love with this book. While reading about the traditions associated with this festival, I was reminded of my own culture and the heritage we have to share with future generations. I was glad to show this book to my daughter, as it gave me the opportunity to talk to her about the Asian culture and the traditions that are so wonderful. She adored both the facts presented and the lovely illustrations, asking so many questions about the festival. In truth, the festival has a rich history, one which dates back to ancient times.
Perhaps one of the biggest gifts that this book has to offer is the one of immersion. Aside from traveling, the best way to acquaint yourself with another culture and its customs is through reading. I often show my daughter books on other cultures, and we talk together about their traditions. The Mid-Autumn festival is truly a cherished event, as the authors wonderfully put it, and we were happy to discover the customs and traditions surrounding it. The book also contains stories that reminded me of Romanian fairy tales, not to mention some delicious recipes, crafts, and activities, perfect for children to try.
My mind is still on the mooncakes, I have read about them in different Asian stories, and now I am happy to have a proper recipe to try with my daughter. The lantern is a must to try as well, especially the German culture also has something similar, and my little one was already curious to see the difference. I am amazed at how much information was present inside the book, you can really tell that the authors poured their heart and soul into this project. Honestly, I wish more books would be written about traditions and customs, as we have gotten accustomed to living in the modern times, forgetting all about the past.
Summary:
This is a wonderful book, one which offers an excellent insight into the traditions and customs surrounding the Mid-Autumn Festival. We get to discover stories, recipes, crafts, and many more things, all of the information included being accompanied by beautiful illustrations. I believe this book to be perfect for both kids and adults, offering a unique reading experience. I was glad to read it and share the experience with my daughter, who is a curious little thing. If there was a piece of advice I could give to anyone, that would be it. Keep reading such books to your kids, they need to learn about other cultures and their traditions, as well as their own.
