[Book Review] The Atlas of Beauty: Women of the World in 500 Portraits, [Author] Mihaela Noroc

A wonderful collection of photography, which will take you on a journey around the world and show you women belonging to various cultures. Mihaela Noroc gathered these photographs in her journeys and her main desire was to show the beauty of women, regardless of their age, background, occupation, ethnicity, race, and so on.

My thoughts:

Mihaela started her photography project in 2013, traveling to various countries and taking photos of everyday women. Her goal was to showcase and celebrate the diversity of the beauty surrounding us. “The Atlas of Beauty” is actually a collection of her photographs, which celebrate women from all over the world. Through her photos, she teaches us that beauty is everywhere, without set standards.

Her portraits are colorful and moving, and they often give insight into the culture or community these women belong to. While browsing this collection, you will travel from the green Amazon rainforest to the busy streets of London, from the noisy markets of India to the urban parks of small American towns, and to many more beautiful places. You will be impressed with the beauty of these women and, at the same time, you will realize how diverse their physical and social worlds can be.

What are some of the things I liked about this book?

· Message – women can look different and each woman is beautiful in her own way; we should embrace the diversity of our world and stop imposing standards of beauty that are not realistic

· Honesty – many of the women included in this collection live in poor regions, without too many opportunities; some are discriminated because of their gender. These photos are eye-opening, making us realize that, in many corners of the world, the concept of equality exists only in theory.

· Beautiful photographs – Mihaela is a talented photographer and I feel that she has successfully captured the essence of each of the women included in this collection. She makes you think about these women long after you’ve turned the page

· Story behind each photo – all the photos are accompanied by captions; with just a few lines, she manages to reveal a bit about these beautiful women, who have dreams, aspirations, sorrows, and regrets, just like the rest of us

· Educating factor – this is not just a collection of photographs, as it offers a unique insight into the traditions, culture, fashion, and habits of so many different women, delivering an accurate glimpse of modern womanhood.

Verdict:

At a first glance, we might be tempted to say that the author had a breeze gathering this collection. In truth, this project required an incredible amount of work and it was often challenging. She traveled to war zones and dangerous slums, dealing with extreme temperatures, illness and emotional upturns. The opportunity to meet so many incredible women helped her go on and overcome difficult moments.

What makes a photography collection special? I believe the key lies in being able to transmit the emotion experienced when taking a certain photograph. With her book, Mihaela achieves that and so much more. She invites us to celebrate the diversity of our fascinating world and appreciate women who are different than us.

Help is needed!

Unfortunately, the pandemic has affected Mihaela’s project and now she needs our help. You can go to her website and make a small donation to support “The Atlas of Beauty”. Let’s help her continue her project, as our world needs people who are willing to expose reality and shatter preconceived notions, outdated standards, gender inequality, hate, and racism.
