An inspiring true story about a boy whose life journey was briefly interrupted by an accident. He did not accept the tragedy as definitive, and fought his way back to triumph.
My thoughts:
I loved everything about this book, starting with the fact that it offers an accurate glimpse into the Great Depression Era. As readers, we have the honor of seeing how life used to be in the 1930s, in coal-mining towns, where poverty was overwhelming.
It was interesting to see a true story being told through the daughter’s eyes, with so many details on life back then and how hard it was to be born into a coal miner’s family. The accident the boy had when he was only six years old defined the rest of his life, but not in the way you would expect.
The book offers valuable lessons on how to overcome adversities in life, and work on getting back to a healthy point, no matter what. I was drawn to the main character’s quiet determination, something which today we call as “grit”. His inner strength was inspiring, and I appreciated that he never gave up on the dream of walking again.
While reading the book, I was easily captivated by the story, it almost felt like watching an emotional movie. I could not wait to find out what happened next, and I loved how the author included photographs to accompany the story.
Verdict:
What an amazing story! It is beautifully-written, and I can honestly say it is one of the best books I have read in a long time. It inspires you to overcome life obstacles, and never stop believing that things will get better. This book is a testament to human strength, and a beautiful tribute to a loving dad. Well done!
