[Book Review] The Other Side of Fear: A Backpacker’s Memoir, [Author] Jenni Reavis

A memoir that will keep you on your toes until the very end. The author delivers an intimate account of difficult past experiences, which involved kidnapping and sexual assault, but also the story of how she managed to overcome the consequences of those experiences and get back to a healthy place.

My thoughts:

What an amazing book! I loved how the author had the courage to share her entire story, providing details on how hard it can be to find the necessary resilience for healing. Her wild adventure of backpacking alone through South America added to the delight of the reading experience, and how amazing it was to see that she managed to create the life of her dreams.

While reading this book, it is true, you will go on a rollercoaster of emotions. However, I believe that we need more books like this, as they will inspire us to overcome difficult experiences and pursue happiness. This memoir is raw and emotional, standing as proof that trauma will leave its mark but it is up to us to reduce its intensity.

The author has an amazing storytelling talent, offering you a glimpse into her soul. You can see that she has poured her heart onto the page, and how much she yearned to experience everything that South America had to offer. She is brave for living her dream, and I feel grateful for having had the opportunity to read about her growth process. I also feel this is the think of book that will help others deal with trauma, finding a way to heal and fight for their own happiness.

Verdict:

I absolutely loved this book! The author was so open and honest about her difficulties, and I found this to be refreshing. She does not sugarcoat her struggles, and I appreciated that she fought for her dream of healing. Her lesson is that we can overcome our past and create the life we always envisioned; all it takes is the courage to pursue that journey, to go down that road. A talented writer!
